Sharp divisions among the students on sectarian grounds at the University of Karachi may trigger violence in the varsity, as the KU management is not taking the matter seriously, it was learnt on Wednesday. Sources said that some banned sectarian outfits are getting strength in the university. They conduct classes and are allegedly involved in disseminating hate-inciting literature.
These groups have also established their sitting points at various locations in the university premises, where they perform their routine organisational activities. The activists of these outfits are said to be armed with sophisticated weapons, which has created fear among thousands of students of the varsity.
Sources alleged that these groups had also support from some teachers of the varsity. Sources said that some students had also moved an application for the construction of a separate mosque for them. The university management has yet to allow construction of separate places of worship for students belonging to different sects. The issue was also presented before the syndicate of the varsity but no decision has been taken in this regard, sources said.
The university lacks a proper surveillance system and there is also no restriction on entering the varsity, which may result in a law and order situation. Security Advisor of Karachi University Iftikhar told Business Recorder that some outlawed groups had painted the walls of the university with hatred slogans, which was removed by the administration immediately.
He said that the varsity was facing shortage of security guards due to which it had failed to develop a security system. Iftikhar said that at present there were 130 security guards and some 100 more guards were required to fulfil the security needs of the varsity.
He said that a high-power surveillance system would be installed in university in near future in order to avert any untoward incident. To a question about the demand of separate mosques by various sectarian groups, he said that the varsity was considering all feasible options and the committee would meet with the people concerned in a few days for a detailed deliberation over the issue. Sources said that the university management had hired the services of ex-serviceman for the establishment of central control room and installation of CCTV cameras, but the appointed officials left the project uncompleted.
