Pakistan is expected to dispatch its first commercial mango consignment to United States during the current month, an official told Business Recorder on Wednesday. PHDEC has been working as a facilitator since the idea of mango export to US germinated and has played a vital role in this regard.
The official said that the role of PHDEC was twofold. First, its responsibility was to arrange government consignment in collaboration with Pakistan embassy in US and second to facilitate stakeholders in their commercial consignments through information sharing. He said that for government consignment, PHDEC had lined up all domestic-level arrangements in 2010 but could not dispatch the consignment due to late notification by APHIS/USDA. This year, the government consignment had been planned for July 27, 2011 in collaboration with Pakistan embassy in USA, for which relevant arrangements were being made, he added.
Regarding the allegations against PHDEC and Pakistan embassy in US for delay in consignments, the official claimed that a New York based businessman, Abid Butt was levelling unfounded allegations. As far as commercial consignments were concerned, the role of PHDEC was to provide information to the importers and exporters and this responsibility was being performed competently, he added. He further stated that PHDEC believed in transparent flow of information and for that purpose its website, www.phdec.org.pk had provided a source of exhaustive information for any professional/non-professional, interested in mango export to US.
