A spokesman of OGRA on Thursday denied the reports published in a section of press that the incident of fire in a coaster recently was triggered due to a gas cylinder explosion.
"As per preliminary information provided to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) by Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP), 4 EKC brand cylinders manufactured as per NZS 5454:1989 were installed in the coaster and they remained reportedly intact during the accident and hence it is not an accident due to the CNG cylinder failure."
He said this while commenting on a news item published in a section of press on Wednesday regarding the incident of fire in a coaster, which killed nine passengers and injured five others. "OGRA is conscious of its mandated responsibility and has already in this context repeatedly advised HDIP to expedite establishing CNG Cylinder Testing Laboratories in order to monitor the integrity of more than 2.3 million cylinders fitted in CNG vehicles," he said.
However, it is also pointed out that fitness of the commercial vehicles are ensured by the motor vehicle examiner under the relevant/applicable law before the same could ply on the road for public use.
