US Ambassador Cameron Munter spoke with over 100 Pakistani students gathered on Thursday at a local hotel to kick off their pre-departure orientation for the US government-funded Global Undergraduate (UGRAD) Programme. The UGRAD programme awards cover all costs for a semester of studies at American universities.
This orientation programme, which is organised by the US Education Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), prepares students with the required skills, attitude, and knowledge to study successfully in the United States. Speaking to the students, Munter said, "We are very fortunate to have so many talented Pakistani students attending American universities through the UGRAD programme. This is one example of the US government's long-term commitment to the education of Pakistanis and to increasing mutual understanding between both countries."
The students will attend 45 universities around the United States and come from all regions of Pakistan. They will study a wide variety of academic disciplines, such as public policy, health, social sciences and fine arts. The students are required to return to Pakistan after completion of their bachelor's degrees to play a positive role in the country's economic and social development.
This one-semester programme for undergraduates was first launched in the fall of 2010 with 50 participants. In view of the successful performance of the Pakistanis, the US Embassy has doubled the size of the programme this year. In addition to the 100 students studying in the US this fall, another 100 will be travelling in 2012 for the spring semester. The US Embassy in Pakistan administers the largest array of US-funded educational, professional, and cultural exchange programmes in any country on earth.-PR
