Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday approved the summary to elevate Hina Rabbani Khar, minister of state for foreign affairs as the country's first woman foreign minister to lead Pakistan's delegation in crucial talks with India by the end of this month, it is reliably learnt.
Sources said Prime Minister Gilani before leaving on a five-day visit to the United Kingdom approved a summary to elevate Khar as foreign minister. Khar, 34 would be the youngest and the country's first woman foreign minister. The summary has now been sent to President Asif Zardari for his approval, sources added. The slot of foreign minister fell vacant after Shah Mahmood Qureshi was removed during a cabinet reshuffle in February, this year.
Since then, the prime minister has been keeping the portfolio himself.
The decision to elevate Khar was made in view of her competency and recent interaction at the Foreign Office, sources said. Her elevation comes a week ahead of crucial Pakistan-India foreign minister level talks to be held on July 26-27 in New Delhi. Khar will lead Pakistan side in the talks.
