Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain Monday directed Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan to resume charge as Sindh Governor as desired by President Asif Ali Zardari (in its July 16 issue, Business Recorder categorically stated that 'Ebad will, continue as Sindh Governor').
This major political development took place following a telephonic conversation between Zardari and Altaf. The MQM chief asked Ebad to work in harmony with the federal and provincial governments under the guidance of the President.
MQM leader and former Sindh Minister for Information Technology (IT) Raza Haroon told Business Recorder that decision has been taken in the larger interest of the country and nation. He said that people belonging to various segments of life including industrialists, businessmen, clerics and members of civil society had requested MQM to fill the vacuum left by Ebad's departure. He however, confirmed that MQM legislators to sit on opposition benches in three houses - Sindh Assembly, National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan. Haroon said Zardari had urged Altaf to ask Ebad to resume governorship in the greater interest of the province.
According to MQM leader Wasey Jalil, stability in Karachi and Sindh is very important. "The governor will work towards restoring peace in Karachi," Jalil added. He said that Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan would be reaching Karachi from Dubai early Tuesday morning.
A strife between MQM and PPP-led coalition government was triggered by the government's decision to postpone elections for Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seats last month. MQM quit the PPP-led government on June 27, 2011 in centre and Sindh.
MQM filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against the deferment of June 26 scheduled Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) elections for the Karachi seats.
The relationship between the two parties took another hit following highly inflammatory anti-MQM statements made by senior Sindh Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.
The longest serving governor in the history of Pakistan, Dr Ebad, had earlier sent his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari. He took the oath of office as the Governor of Sindh on December 27, 2002. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah telephoned Ebad and felicitated him on resuming the charge of Governor's House.
