Vegetables and fruits prices have started climbing up ahead of Ramazan and the retailers expressed fear that onion may become much dearer in couples of days. They said that consumption of onion, green chili, tomato, potato and fruits increases during Ramazan and alleged that the sellers have started hoarding of onion to make money during Ramazan.
Price of onion has registered an increase from Rs 8 to Rs 10 per kg to Rs 20 to 25 per kg in last few days
Similarly, price of tomato has been increased from Rs 8-10 to Rs 30 to 35 per kg. Likewise price of potato increased from Rs 10 per kg to 30 per kg A week before the price of tomato and onion were Rs 200 per kg in the wholesale market but now it is being sold at Rs 450.
However, some of the vegetable dealers said that the end of tomato crop season in Sindh and delay in arrival of fresh crop of onion are the main reasons for jump in onion and tomato prices
They pointed out that last year during Ramazan price of onion in Karachi was ranging between Rs 85 to Rs 90 per kg.
Green chilly has been offered for sale at Rs 20 per 100 gram, garlic has been offered at Rs 200 to 250 per kg, ginger at Rs 150 per kg, carrot Rs 80 per kg, bananas Rs 35 to 50 per dozen, lemon Rs 160 per kg, mango Rs 60 to Rs 130 per kg, peaches Rs 100 to Rs 130 per kg.
