Pakistan Workers Confederation urged the government to bring about durable peace and tranquillity in the port city Karachi, the economic hub of the country. Only poor suffer when there is a law-and-order situation or industries are shut down in the city. "One day's strike in Karachi causes loss of billions of rupees to the nation and workers are deprived of a day's salary," labour leaders said.
The PWC Punjab chapter held a meeting here on Tuesday which was attended by veteran labour leaders Khurshid Ahmad, Ms Rubina Jamil, Chaudhry Talib Nawaz, Mohammad Nawaz, Fazal Wahid and Yousuf Baloch.
They further demanded the government to provide gas and electricity to the industrial sector which provides job opportunities to millions of workers. A large number of factories are being closed and workers are laid off owing to shortage of energy. They opined that radical social and economic reforms are needed to solve the country's economic problems and ensure fair deal to the working classes.
