Manchhar Lake project: Supreme Court seeks report from Sindh, Federal governments

The Supreme Court Wednesday directed Sindh and Federal governments to submit a detailed report of long-term project for making Manchhar Lake contamination-free.
A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry sought the report while resuming hearing in a suo motu case regarding Manchhar Lake water contamination due to disposal effluent from MNV Fran not converted into RBOD.
During the hearing, the bench was informed by advocate Supreme Court Qasim Mir Jat that Sindh government has installed three filtration plants to provide clean water to the dwellers, residing in surrounding of the lake whereas nine more plants installation has been planned so far.
The CJP directed the Sindh government's Irrigation Department to accelerate efforts in making the lake water contamination-free whereas economic protection of the fishermen in the area should also be ensured, adding that their fundamental rights should be guaranteed under Article 9 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
"Fishermen are also citizen of this country so their economic murder should be avoided" The CJP observed. Latter on, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till August 9.
