Initial construction work on Rs 1394 million mega project of Asia's largest Mirpur-Islamgarh bridge over the Mangla Dam reservoir had been started after the government accorded formal approval of the project, official sources said.
The sources close to Mangla dam affairs told APP here on Thursday that the government had allocated Rs 270 million for the first phase of the 7181-meter long bridge and the initial work on the project had yet been started as the National Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECNEC) of the federal government had formally approved the project.
The project was targeted to be completed within three-year of stipulated period, the sources said. Elaborating the salient features of the project, the source said the Rathua-Harriyam bridge would be the longest ever bridge and the first of its kind not only in AJK but also in entire South Asia.
The bridge will not only reduce the already-long zigzag road link between the city and Islamgarh town to an unprecedented extent but would also reduce the time for the commuters travelling between the district headquarter and Kotli, and Mirpur to Dadayal to a greater extent.
The construction of bridge over the picturesque Mangla Dam reservoir, surrounded by the lush-green hills, would open new vistas for the promotion of tourism industry not only in the district but also in other parts of the division, the sources said.
The process of implementation of development package for the resettlement of the affectees of under-construction Mangla dam raising project has been geared up under an integrated plan to ensure its completion within the stipulated time-frame, the official sources indicated. The process of payment of compensation to the old and new Mangla dam affectees has almost been completed and a total of Rs 56 billion had been spent for resettlement and rehabilitation of the affected families of the Mangla dam raising project, the sources added.
