Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has strongly opposed handing over of Karachi to the army for maintaining law and order situation because it might bring the Army face-to-face with the public. Taking part in the ongoing debate on Karachi Chief of JUI Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that personally he was not in favour of calling the army in Karachi but the question is why the situation has reached an extent that opposition and government both are demanding to give the control of the city to the army.
Fazlur Rehman said that army is a national institution and should not be brought in confrontation with the public. Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have came hard on the government for her failure to prevent ongoing targeted killing spree in Karachi and a verbal confrontation between the members of PML-N and PPP was seen following a strong worded speech by Hanif Abbasi of PML-N targeting President Asif Ali Zardari and top leadership of the party and response by Imtiaz Safdar Warriach President Pakistan People's Party Punjab. Political point scoring dominated the ongoing debate on targeted killings in Karachi with accusation and counter accusation by both the sides, PPP and PML-N.
Hanif Abbasi said that his party supported creation of more provinces on administrative basis and not on linguistic, ethnic grounds and alleged that ruling party was trying to repeat the history of 1971. Imitiaz Safdar Warriach said that PML-N leaders have been feeling pain about the people of Karachi but never visited the city. Bushara Gohar of ANP and other were upset on the ongoing political point-scoring between the leaders of the two political parties. Bushar Gohar said that issue of Karachi is very serious and needed attention of the House. She said that it is the responsibility of the ruling party to demonstrate tolerance and patience even in the face of the harshest criticism by the opposition. Bushra said that as
Urdu-speaking people who migrated to Karachi in 1947 is a reality, similarly those who migrated for economic reasons must be accepted. She underlined the need for negotiated settlement among all the stakeholders in Karachi as there is no other solution to the problem.
