Following the strike call given by nationalist parties of Sindh against the restoration of Sindh Local Governments Ordinance 2001 in Karachi and Hyderabad, tension gripped several Sindhi dominated areas of the city, where miscreants torched a passenger bus late Sunday night.
According to reports, unidentified miscreants, who resorted to aerial firing in various parts of the metropolis, set a passenger bus on fire near Safora Chowrangi in Mobina Town police limits.
Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Steel Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Sacchal, Baldia Town,
Ittehad Town and Malir remained tense after the strike call, where all commercial and social activities were suspended. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers were deployed in the affected areas to avert any untoward situation.
Earlier various nationalist parties of Sindh on Sunday rejected two local government systems in Sindh after end to the Commissionerate system in Hyderabad and Karachi, and called for a province-wide strike against the decision on Monday.
Awami Tahreek, Jeay Sindh Quami Movement (JSQM), Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party (STPP), Jeay Sindh Tahreek and other nationalist parties rejected the decision of revival of past LG system in Karachi and Hyderabad and run the rest of the province under the Commissionerate system. They termed it a conspiracy to divide the province of Sindh.
Earlier, an activist of Sunni Tehreek was killed while four others injured in New Karachi. Following the killing, tension gripped Godhra Camp, New Karachi and other adjacent areas where intense firing was reported, which led to suspension of all commercial and social activities.
Police said the deceased was identified as Shoaib, 26, son of Siraj. They said the deceased was targeted when he was standing near his residence and added that three more persons including Shaukat, 40, Saqib Saeed, 10, Ahmed Allah Rakha, 22 and Faraz Farooq, 16 were also injured in this attack.
In another incident, a 48-year-old man was gunned down in the jurisdiction of Model Colony police station. Police said the victim was identified as Sawar.
Another man was shot dead at Manghopir Road in the precincts of Site A police station. The victim, Abid Hussain, 28, son of Mursaleen, a resident of Orangi Town sector 11, was killed when he was on the way to home on motorcycle.
One, Sohail Irani, an activist of Pakistan People's Party, was injured in an armed attack in Baldia Town in the jurisdiction of Saeedabad police station. He received three bullets and was shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi.
In another incident, Zafar Akhter, 40, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was injured in an armed ambush when he was standing near his residence within the jurisdiction of Gulbahar police station.
A bullet-riddled body was found in the limits of Iqbal Market police station. The identity of victim was yet to be ascertained, while police found the body in cottage industrial zone sector 11. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post mortem and later moved to Edhi Morgue.
