The demolition of 194 decrepit buildings which had been declared dangerous will start soon besides residents of these buildings would be temporarily shifted to the apartments build in Scheme-33. A high powered committee has been formed that would be empowered to implement the suggestions in this regard and carry out the demolition work on such buildings.
The respective town administrator and representative of Building Control Authority, Police, CDGK and Technical Committee on Dangerous Buildings have been made its members. In the first phase, action would be taken in the old city area and various areas of Jamshed Town. A survey report said the city presently has more than a thousand old buildings which though could be made useable with heavy expenditures on them but a total of 194 buildings were not in a condition to be restored or repaired, hence there is no other way but to demolish these structures.
Despite being declared as illegal by the building control authority no action has still been taken on over a hundred buildings. DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed said we all should fight the case of protection of human lives. If lives of people could be secured by making amendments in the building control bye-laws then we go on with it without delay.
He further said that the concerned authority should have the record of every building constructed in city including the date of its establishment, number of floors and apartments and families residing in the building. DCO Karachi said the utility service providers should also disallow the utility connection to floors other than the approved floors of the building.
