Rs nine billion BoP loan scam: Sheikh Afzal ready to pay off outstanding amount, Supreme Court told
The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday was informed that Sheikh Afzal, one of the principal defaulters of Bank of Punjab (BoP) in Rs 9 billion loan scam, is ready to settle the liabilities and pay off the outstanding amount against him and his family. Khawaja Tariq Rahim while representing Sheikh Haris Afzal son of Sheikh Afzal submitted that his client was ready to pay off the balance to Bank of Punjab and settle all the liabilities outstanding against Sheikh Afzal and his family.
Khawaja Haris, counsel for Bank of Punjab, told the court that for the last two years Sheikh Afzal and his son had been giving various statements, but nothing had happened. But Khawaja Tariq pleaded before a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Ghulam Rabbani that he would sit with Khawaja Haris to settle the liabilities.
On the occasion, Khawaja Tariq Rahim also apologised on behalf of his client, who had used indecent language against the chairman of Salvage Committee former Justice Jamshaid and Uzair Bhandari, who had earlier represented the Sheikh Afzal's family in the Committee. The Salvage Committee was constituted to evaluate Harris's property.
The court noted that former judge Jamshaid was appointed as chairman of the salvage committee on the directives of the Supreme Court. The CJP said that Haris Afzal has no right to use indecent language against the honourable judges and Bhandari. "We have given full authority to Justice Jamshaid", The CJP said. The hearing was adjourned till August 18.
