The Pakistan International Airlines has damaged its position severely due to frequent technical faults developed in its aircraft, depicting inadequate maintenance which some circles allege is being done to create justification for purchase of new aircraft.
According to sources, the authorities tasked to look after the maintenance of PIA aircraft are intentionally not carrying out their duties in proper manner, and standard of aircraft maintenance is not being maintained up to the mark. The fact that no action is taken against those responsible for these lapses shows that this is being done with the nod of PIA administration.
They pointed out that most recent delays and cancellation of PIA flights include three instances where rare problem in landing gear occurred. Karachi-Kuwait Flight PK 215 got delayed for two hours due to fault in the landing gear of Boeing 737. Karachi-Mumbai flight PK 274 also returned from the take-off point due to fault in the airbus's landing gear. Due to another fault, in landing gear of the aircraft, PK 745 Sialkot-Jeddah flight landed in Karachi, and it took off after 5 hours' delay. Another flight, PK 741 Islamabad-Jeddah, departed after one-and-a-half hours' delay.
They shared the recent data of flight delays and cancellation, as PIA had cancelled flights PK 233/4 Karachi-Muscat-Karachi, PK 341/2 Karachi-Faisalabad-Karachi, and PK 221/222 Faisalabad-Multan-Dubai-Faisalabad due to 'technical faults' in Boeing 737, causing severe mental torture to the passengers.
A more embarrassing incident occurred in Paris when PIA Airbus A310 flight PK 743/9 August Paris-Lahore was stopped from flying after Safa inspection, as the Airbus was found not meeting the safety standards, and the passengers had to be flown back to Pakistan through PK 702 Manchester-Islamabad via Paris.
Delays due to maintenance flaws are numerous and bring bad name for the airline, so much so that the maintenance of new ATR aircraft has also been relegated and this is causing long delays in the flights as well. Sources regretted that by overlooking international aircraft maintenance procedures, some vested interests in the national carrier are intentionally endangering the lives of PIA aircraft and its passengers alike, just to gain personal and unfair advantages.
