The ruling parities are yet to nominate members of the high-power parliamentary committee constituted on Karachi and Balochistan situation, as Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza on Friday sent a reminder to the parties' heads asking them to forward names of their representatives without further delay so as the panel could start its work at the earliest, it has been learnt.
Owing to the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi and Balochistan, the political parties developed a consensus during the recent Session of National Assembly and adopted a unanimous resolution authorising the Speaker National Assembly to constitute a parliamentary committee on the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi and Balochistan.
The motion for the formation of the committee was moved by Sheikh Aftab Ahmad of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N). Parliamentary sources said that responding the letter sent to the parties heads by Speaker Femida Mirza, three political parties belonging to opposition have forwarded names of their representatives for the proposed parliamentary committee.
Those parties who have forwarded names of their representatives included Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which nominated Zahid Hamid, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Sardar Mehtab, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Rana Tanveer as its members, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has forwarded the names of Haider Abbas Rizvi, Wasim Akhtar, Asif Hassnain and Sajid Ahmed to represent the party in the committee. While Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) has nominated Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman to be the member of the panel, the sources added.
They further said that the ruling parties including Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Awami National Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) are yet to nominate their representatives to the committee. The sources said that Speaker National Assembly sent a reminder to the heads of the three political parties to nominate their representatives for the committee so as the panel could start its functioning on the earliest.
The reason behind delay in nominating their representatives for the committee was, however, not known, but the sources said that the Speaker in the reminder urged the heads of the parties in the ruling coalition to immediately forward names of their members. The parliamentary committee would formulate recommendations to the government on the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi and Balochistan.
The sources said the parliamentary panel after completion of representation of all political parties would either elect its chairman or the Speaker National Assembly by her special powers would nominate any person to head the committee. "The committee members would visit Karachi and Quetta to review the causes of unrest there and would present their report to the speaker within two months," the sources added.
