Every individual and every family are seriously concerned at what is happening in the city of teeming millions. The city has been witnessing that people, innocent people in most of the cases, are being kidnapped, tortured, shot, stuffed in sacks and dumped on various Karachi streets.
The violence has claimed 50 lives in two days. This is happening in a city where the holy month of Ramazan began under the shadow of death. Almost 1,000 people have fallen victim to violence since January 1, 2011. A large number of families have been deprived of bread winners. They have to live with the life-long wounds that chaos and disorder of the highest order inflict on any society.
The productivity of economic hub of the country has been badly hampered by the rising incidents of extortion, kidnappings and killings. The government has miserably failed to control the situation owing to a variety of reasons. The law and order situation has reached a point that many people, including the business community, are openly calling for the deployment of troops in the metropolis. I am no pessimist, but for some unknown reasons I have been repeatedly asking this question: Should we still have hope? A Chinese proverb says, "May you live in interesting times." And we are perhaps living in such times.
