Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Pakistan 2011 survey will be conducted in 84 districts of the country - 82 rural and two urban districts - and its results would be shared with key stakeholders by mid January 2012. ASER Pakistan 2011 Survey was formally launched at a workshop here on Wednesday, which was participated by associates and citizen volunteers from 84 districts.
Since 2008, the South Asian Forum for Education Development (SAFED) through its partners and civil society groups has been undertaking a rural household based learning assessment survey, called the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Pakistan targeting children aged 5-16 learning levels, and testing their reading and numeracy skills. Director Programmes Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi gave a presentation on ASER. She stressed the need of citizen led action for improving the horrendous state of education in Pakistan.
Amima Sayeed - TRC, Mazhar Siraj - DFID, Dr Waqar Ashraf - FDE, T M Qureshi - Advisor CAD and Nargis Sultana - OSI, participated in the panel discussion on the citizens' led initiatives. Jamil Bajwa, Director NEAS and Arshad Bhatti, Civil Junction were also among the main speakers at the event. They emphasised on the importance of campaigns such as ASER in order to instigate the citizens to take action for themselves. ASER Pakistan is being facilitated by SAFED. SAFED has been envisaged to provide a platform for discussion and debate on issues pertinent to the education sector in the South Asian region.
