Police have filed corruption charges against four Indian lawmakers after bribery was alleged in a crucial confidence vote the ruling Congress party faced in 2008. A police official said Wednesday charges had been filed against Amar Singh, Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora. Singh belongs to the Socialist Party and the rest to the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party. Singh's party was a government ally and the BJP the main opposition.
The official could not be identified because he wasn't authorised to speak to reporters. No other details were available. A leaked US diplomatic cable said the Congress party bribed lawmakers ahead of a vote over a nuclear deal with the United States. The government denied any bribery took place.
