The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Sunday vowed to launch a protest movement against the Punjab government if Shahbaz Taseer was not recovered by Monday (tomorrow).
Addressing a press conference here District President Khalid Hanif Lodhi, City President Khurshid Ahmed Khan, Prime Minister's Media co-ordinator Khawaja Rizwan Alam and Governor's consultant Salim-ur-Rehman Mayo said that protest rallies would be held at district level from Monday to press for the recovery of Shahbaz Taseer. Condemning the incident, he said that it had disturbed all citizens of the province. To a question, they said that the security agencies of the federal and provincial governments were working together and sharing information in Shahbaz Taseer case.
They said that Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif should improve the law and order in his "own province" and then talk about other provinces.
They said that Lahore was the capital of the province and had headquarters of the Punjab Police but no progress could be made in the case of Shahbaz Taseer so far.
Presenting crime figures in the province, he said that in 2010, at least 75,419 crime cases were registered, including 627 murder cases. At least 170 rape and 160 cases of torture against government servants were registered last year. He said that so far about 13,497 kidnapping cases had been registered, 2,176 in the city alone.
They said that 8,974 cases of kidnapping for ransom were registered during the current year. He said that the crime ratio in Punjab had increased by 30 percent, adding that the leadership of the PML-N could not make tall claims of "good governance" in the given situation.
Responding to a question regarding suo motu action on the abduction incident, they said that courts were independent to take notice. He said that Pakistan People's Party, the opposition in the Punjab Assembly, would submit a requisition for the assembly session after Monday, adding that all constitutional options would be adopted.
Khawaja Rizwan Alam Prime Minister's media co-ordinator has said that the abduction of Shahbaz Taseer is an intolerable act and it has exposed the Punjab government's failure regarding the law and order situation. Talking to journalists here today he said that all the federal and provincial law enforcement agencies had joined hands to recover Shahbaz Taseer. He added that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had also called the Punjab Chief Minister, Governor Punjab Sardar Latif Khosa, Inspector General of Police Punjab and the home secretary to get information about the ongoing recovery operation.
He said that he had instructed both the officials regarding the case and told them to expand the circle of investigation.
