Federal Government has increased the toll tax on motorway, bridges and other highways by 40 percent with effect from September 1. Now wagons are paying Rs 35 instead of Rs 25, cars Rs 25 instead of Rs 20, and trucks-trailers Rs 175. Transporters have rejected the recent increase in toll plaza fee describing it unjust.
On the other hand, private van terminal owners were fleecing the transporters with both hands. They have charged Rs 300 per trip from the 14-seater vans and transporters shifted this burden toward the passengers and they charged Rs 50 for Muzaffargarh, Shujabad, MakhdoomRasheed instead of Rs 40.
Transporters told this scribe that private van terminal owners were looting the owners, and are charging Rs 1000 per day on Muzaffargarh-Multan route in Multan only, thus extorting millions of rupees daily from the van owners.
Regional Transport Authority has tightened lip on this situation and did not bother to check the overloaded vans, overcharging on different routes, unserviceable vehicles, untrained and reckless drivers. Staff of Regional Transport Authority and Traffic police department visit the bus, van terminals once a month when they have to collect their share from the transporters as well as terminal owners, Adda Managers etc.
