The recent floods have displaced a large number of families in Sindh. In order to help the families of those affected by the flood, Governor Iqbal Qureshi of Rotary International, and many other members of Rotary clubs recently visited the flood affected areas in Mirpukhas, Thar and Badin regions and distributed food packets, medicines, tents and other relief goods.
After evaluating the degree of damage and destruction caused by the floods, Rotary has decided to establish relief camps in Samaro, Kunri, Digri, Badin and Thatta to help affected families.
"ShelterBox Trust UK along with Rotary International clubs was amongst the first two international organisations to have reached the affected areas", said Faiz Kidwai, Regional Rotary Foundation Chair and Country Representative ShelterBox UK. ShelterBox UK immediately came in action with its pre-positioned tents and shelter boxes. ShelterBox Trust UK has partnered with NRSP, National Rural Support Programme, and Rotary for distribution and installation of these tents and shelter boxes. More than 2500 shelter box and tents have been moved into these affected regions. The worth of this donation by ShelterBox Trust UK is worth Rs 150 million (USD 1.8 million) approx. These tents are high quality and scientifically designed as all weather tents, which can accommodate a family of 8 to 10 members for a minimum of 18 months. The ShelterBox in addition to containing a tent also contains blankets, utensils, water purification bottle, stove, tool kit etc.
Rotary is partnering with Sindh Red Crescent Society for logistic support in some of the camps in these areas. The local rotary clubs in these areas in co-ordination of Sindh Red Crescent Society will be responsible for regular supply, support and monitoring of these camps on regular basis. Rotary International is a world leading humanitarian service organisation and has a membership of more than 1.2 million Rotarians and a presence in more than 200 countries. Rehabilitation is one of Rotary's many areas of focus. The dedication and hardwork of Rotary leaders and members has changed the lives of thousands of people displaced by natural calamities.-PR
