The US government sponsored a two-day workshop for senior Public Relations (PR) and Customer Services & staff of eight power sector distribution companies (Discos) to introduce the latest practices in communications and outreach. The workshop focused on the ways to improve Disco outreach to consumers, which will lead to promote Disco image and better customer services.
This workshop was organised as part of the US commitment to support the government of Pakistan in reforming the energy sector and addressing power shortages in the country.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) implements these assistance programmes, which also support completion of dams, renovation of power plants, and introduction of more efficient technologies to reduce energy using the agriculture sector.
"Corporate image building and consumer awareness about functions and responsibilities of the Disco are important areas of intervention identified by the operational audits of Discos that USAID's Power Distribution Improve-ment Programme conducted in early 2011. There is need to engage and educate electricity consumers by providing them timely and comprehensive information about the role and services of Discos." said Dick Dumford, Chief of Party of the USAID Power Distribution Improvement Program, which organised the training in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Water
"Such trainings shall provide a platform for the Disco communication staff to learn new techniques and practices of communications and outreach using print, electronic and traditional ways of communications. PDIP shall work closely with Discos PR and customer service staff bringing improvements in their services for consumers and Discos itself."
MWP-USAID Power Distribution Improvement Program (PDIP) is a three-year, USAID-funded program aimed at working jointly with government-owned electric power Distribution Companies (Discos) in Pakistan to improve their performance in terms of reduction in losses, and improvement in revenues and customer services, to bring them to a level of well-run utilities as in other progressive countries.
Through this programme, the United States government provides assistance and support to the Government of Pakistan (GOP) in its efforts to reform the power sector to end the current energy crisis.
