TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 20: Manchar Lake case: Sindh got only Rs 26 million for RBOD project so far, Supreme Court told

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was informed on Monday that the government of Sindh sought Rs 5000 million to complete Right Bank Outfall Drainage (RBOD) project - II during the current fiscal year while the federal government allocated only Rs 26 million so far.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing a suo motu case relating to contamination of water of Manchar Lake due to disposal of effluent from MNV Drain not converted into RBOD. During the hearing, Advocate Supreme Court Muhammad Qasim Jat on behalf of Advocate General Sindh submitted a joint report before the bench in pursuance of the SC orders on quarterly basis.
The report was prepared by Chief Secretary Sindh and Chief Engineer South Wapda Ghulam Ali Soomro. The report stated that three desalination plants in the Lake were installed whereas other nine plants would be installed till December. It added that the government of Sindh has released Rs 24 million to Wapda to install six plants in the Manchar Lake, adding that the provincial government was allocated Rs 26 million in the first quarter of current fiscal year against Rs 1300 million. The report disclosed that total allocation for the RBOD-II project was worth Rs 5000 million. Additional Attorney General KK Agha prayed for more time to fix the matter with federal government. The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
