Although, the havoc wreaked by dengue virus is profoundly alarming, the contributions by a team of Sri Lankan experts towards Punjab government's efforts aimed at tackling this menace are highly praiseworthy. Amid mounting deaths caused by dengue fever, this team of experts, specialising in treating and controlling the disease, has played a highly important role in creating public awareness about this disease.
According to them, fumigation, being done officially or unofficially, can help overcome the spread of ailment by just 15 percent while preventive measures taken by the community at homes can defeat it by 85 percent. The team is from a developing country, which has successfully grappled with the disease over the past 30 years mainly by creating 100 percent public awareness. Additionally, it has introduced legislation that penalises citizens who do not implement precautionary measures in their homes.
Lack of knowledge about dengue in Pakistan has, in fact, led to creating panic, which eventually caused so many deaths among patients already suffering from diabetes or heart problems. A number of such patients can't physically and psychologically bear the pressure of the disease and collapse having cardiac arrest. According to these experts, the best treatment for the dengue fever patient was to keep checking his or her temperature for three days and then treat him by the use of only Paracetamol in the next 10 days to make him recover from the disease.
The Sri Lankan team has reportedly told the Punjab chief minister that it would stay in Pakistan till the time the problem was overcome. It said that it would carry out tests of all water triggering dengue fever. The Punjab chief minister has publicly acknowledged the services rendered by the team of a friendly country. Speaking at a seminar on this disease at Lahore's Al-Hamra Auditorium on September 24, he particularly named the head of the team, Dr Fernandes, and thanked him and his colleagues for their role towards efforts aimed at fighting off this disease. In fact, the entire nation salutes the Sri Lankan team of experts for making such a highly valuable contribution with a view to overcoming our plight.
