The birth of Mongol, deaf and dumb babies can be checked in Pakistan with the modern advancement in medical science. Leading embryologist Dr Haroon Latif Khan on Sunday speaking at a workshop on "Genetic Disorder" here said that the proper application of pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) procedure can significantly reduce the chances of baby (foetus) to be affected with a specific genetic condition or chromosomal abnormality.
Now families can get rid of inherited medical complications and body deformity which includes deafness, dumbness, down syndrome (Mongol babies), turner syndrome, thalassaemia and haemophilia and several other genetic disorder complications, he added.
He said by the grace of Allah Almighty, within a short span of time, 10 mothers have so far given birth to healthy kids at this institute without any symptoms of inherited medical complications while same number of other pregnancies are in progress.
Dr Haroon said that with the same technique, gender selection is also possible for family balance. He said earlier people who can afford had to travel abroad for this most expensive treatment but now the same facility is available in Pakistan at specific centres.
He further elaborated that PGD was developed to prevent transfer of serious genetic disorders and to establish gender. The procedure promises 30-40 success for conceiving pregnancy world-wide similar to IVF (test tube baby) and its rate is same in Pakistan. About the attempts, he said that from medical point of view, there was no restriction on the number of attempts.
Responding to a question about the PGD procedure, he said it was conducted step by step which included preliminary check of husband and wife, baseline hormone profile of wife, drug treatment through injections to boost egg production and maturation, ultrasound monitoring to check growth of follicles and adjust drug doses besides preventing serious side effects.
He stressed for creating awareness among people through print and electronic media to avail this latest medical facility in Pakistan and shape their families without genetic disorder. Later, he demonstrated the procedure through video at Lahore Institute of Fertility and Endocrinology (LIFE).
