Though the prices of vegetables and other kitchen items have sky-rocketed, yet the rates of chicken meat have fallen to Rs 140 per kg in the retail market which was being sold at Rs 215 per kg earlier this month owing to over-production in Punjab.
Former President of Pakistan Poultry Association and a prominent poultry farmer, Abdul Basit told Business Recorder here on Sunday that poultry is a perishable commodity. The farmer cannot retain it when stock is ripe for marketing.
Basit said that the poultry farmer is selling the chicken meat at a loss of Rs 25 per kg as the poultry products could not be transported to interior Sindh which has been badly hit by the recent rains and floods.
He said that 25,000 poultry farms across the country produce 3 million birds or 6 million kg chicken meat daily. If this huge production is not disposed of daily at whatsoever rate offered by the market operators, then the producer suffers crushing financial losses.
He called upon the government to evolve such a mechanism as the poor farmers do not suffer such losses. Chicken meat is the fundamental kitchen item that has helped stabilise prices of other mutton, beef, vegetables, grams, etc., he added.
