Federal Steering Committee on Chaghi Water Management and Agriculture Development Project on Monday decided to continue the project for further one year to complete the remaining work in Chaghi and Nushki districts of Balochistan.
Federal Minister for Postal Services and Chairman of the Committee Sardar Muhammad Umar Gorage chaired the committee meeting while Finance Secretary Balochistan Dostain Khan Jamaldini, Deputy Secretary P&D Division Mumtaz Hussain, Country Representative of IDB Shahid Ahmed, Director General Wafaqi Mohtasib Muhammad Tahir Anwar and Chief (Water) P&D Division Naseer Ahmed also attended the meeting.
The federal minister while briefing the media said that the objective of the project is to alleviate poverty of the farming community of Chaghi and Nushki districts by developing 300,000 acres of land in both districts through exploitation of surface and ground water resources and land reclamations to increase 200,000 tons of wheat production.
It is informed that the progress of the project was boosted up specially during the last two years. The project has now achieved more than 90 percent physical targets by utilising 81 percent funds till June 30, 2011. It may be mentioned here that Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on April 23, 2003 at a cost of Rs 567.170 million including Islamic Development Bank (IDB) financing to the extent of Rs 433.865 million. The duration of the project was originally of five years. The project activities were started in February, 2007. Hence the project implementation was delayed for a period of four years.
