Pakistan's greatest untapped resource is its highly qualified and motivated womenfolk, who, if given a chance, have the ability to lead its economy to impressive new records of productivity and prosperity. This was stated by Dr Marilyn Wyatt, wife of US ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron Munter, while speaking at a training workshop, organised by USAID, for female workers of Iesco, here on Monday. "A major step towards our mutual goal of a strong, world-class power sector in Pakistan is empowering the women, who work for the power distribution companies," she said.
Dr Wyatt said "we endeavour to see women in leadership role, traditionally held by men whether it is health services or education sector." Wyatt said that women were playing an increasingly visible role in power sector, adding that a great number of females were performing their duties behind the scenes to help power distribution companies and other entities.
She quoted her meeting with a woman who serves in 'women in energy' task force and maintained that both behind the scene and in the spotlight, these women, would without an iota of doubt, take Pakistan's power sector to new heights. In today's world, all workers and not only women, Wyatt said, need top-notch IT skills as global economy demands it and a country the size of Pakistan needs it the most in this digitally connected world that turned it into a global village.
"I am pleased that PDIP has had the wisdom to organise these trainings in IT for the employees of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) and am especially pleased to be here today to greet the women who are completing the training," she stressed. While drawing the attention of the trainees, Wyatt said it was employees like you on which not only the Iesco and other DISCOs, but all of Pakistan depends.
Meanwhile, when asked about fate of USAID projects in Pakistan in the face of the ongoing tension between the two frontline allies on war against terror, she smilingly skipped the question, saying that her husband [Munter] would be the right person to respond to such queries, which purely relates to the diplomatic stint through which both the countries are passing at present.
