Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani discussed security issues in a meeting with the President held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday. Federal Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Secretary General to the President M. Salman Faruqui and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir also attended the meeting.
According to sources, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir briefed the President and Prime Minister about his meeting with US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter. The Foreign Secretary also briefed both the leaders regarding diplomatic efforts to defuse tension between Pakistan and the US.
Sources said that Bashir told the meeting that the US had agreed to hold a dialogue and undertake a deeper and constructive engagement with Pakistan to resolve the dispute over Haqqani network.
In this regard, the sources said that Saudi Arabia also played an important role towards defusing tensions between the two countries. The President and Prime Minister also discussed the All Parties Conference (APC) to be held on Thursday to evolve a national consensus on security issues in the backdrop of the blunt US threats to Pakistan. According to a handout issued from the Presidency, current political and security situation in the country was discussed during the meeting.
The devastation caused by floods in Sindh and the relief and rehabilitation measures were also discussed. The upcoming meeting of the political leadership of the country in order to evolve national consensus on current situation also came under discussion. Reposing confidence in the ability of democratic leadership to stand united at all times that calls for unity, the President expressed the hope that the country's political leadership would be able to reach consensus on issues of national concerns. The President hosted a luncheon for the Prime Minister.
