Opposing the two weekly offs, Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), urged the government to denotify banks, customs and ports from observing two weekly holidays. He said that the country was passing through most difficult times of its history when the injured economy due to manifold internal and external problems was demanding to work 365 days in year for its recovery.
In the meantime the customs, ports and banks should be operative 6-days in the week for the larger interest of commerce and industry as well as the country. President MCCI, Mian Anis Ahmad Sheikh said two-weekly holidays for all federal government departments and its affiliated institutions in the name of energy conservation remained fruitless. He said previous practices by the government when 5-days week was observed for public sector, customs and ports severely hampered the commercial and industrial activity and exports of consignments and timely clearance of goods were suffered. He said due to such practice Pakistan remained cut off for three and half days with rest of the world. Last year, due to 5-working days of banks, the trading and industrial circles faced tremendous problems because of unavailability of banking services.
