Pakistan on Thursday rejected the reports that China was seeking military bases in FATA or FANA to contain terrorist activities of the Chinese rebels, terming it "rubbish and fabricated". "The reports are rubbish and pure fabrication," Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua briefly said in her weekly press briefing.
She further said that President Asif Ali Zardari would visit Turkey from Monday on the invitation of his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul. The President will discuss bilateral co-operation, regional and international issues with the Turkish President, she added.
Janjua said that Turkey will host a trilateral summit on November 01 under the agenda of peace, stability, economic co-operation and reconciliation in Afghanistan. President Abdullah Gul, President Hamid Karzai and President Asif Ali Zardari will participate in the summit being held ahead of crucial Istanbul summit. To a question, she said that the cross border incursions from Afghanistan were great concerns for Pakistan and the matter would be discussed during the trilateral summit.
She said that Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar would lead Pakistan's delegation to Istanbul Regional Conference on Afghanistan to be held on November 02. "We envisage the conference as a platform to express the region's solidarity and support for Afghanistan in its endeavours to establish peace and stability," she added.
Janjua said that Pakistan supported efforts for a secure, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan contributing to stability, security and prosperity in the region, adding that regional support for this undertaking was of particular significance. She said Islamabad believed that Istanbul Conference should manifest in tangible terms its support for Afghanistan on the basis of established principles of inter-state conduct enshrined in the UN Charter and the International Law as well as material, financial and technical support for socio economic development.
"In dealing with the existing challenges, the conference should also affirm support for eliminating all forms and manifestation of terrorism as well as production and trafficking of drugs in psychotropic substances," she said adding it was important that unity of purpose and the region's support for Afghanistan must be ensured through "consensus decision making".
To a question, the spokesperson said that Pakistan evaluated US Secretary of State Clinton's visit positively, adding it was useful and constructive, which allowed an opportunity for in-depth discussions. She said there was broad convergence of views between the two countries at the strategic level.
"Both countries agreed to have a work plan to translate these convergences into desired results," she said adding that complex situations required clarity of purpose, objectivity and firm determination and that is what both countries were willing to look at.
The spokesperson further said that Prime Minister Gilani would visit Moscow on November 07 to participate in Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) summit on the invitation of his Russian counterpart. The summit would discuss issues relating to regional security, trade, connectivity, energy and co-operation against terrorism and drug trafficking, she said adding that the Prime Minister would also discuss bilateral matters with his Russian counterpart.
She said that Pakistan was keen to become full member of SCO on account of its immense potential for dealing with common challenges. "Pakistan-Russia bilateral relations are characterised by increasing mutual trust and commonality of interests....there is a strong desire on both sides to deepen and expand bilateral co-operation for mutual benefit," she added.
She said that Prime Minister Gilani would also lead Pakistan's delegation at SAARC summit to be held in Maldives from November 10 to 11, 2011 under the theme 'Building Bridges' - an enhanced focus on increasing transportation and communication links, promoting regional trade and investment and freer movement of people to facilitate cultural exchanges.
Responding to a query pertaining to the possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Gilani and his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of SAARC summit, she said that the Foreign Office was in touch with Indian External Affairs Ministry to see what could be worked out.
She further said that Pakistan expressed complete solidarity with the Kashmiri people on the Black Day, which was observed on Thursday, adding Pakistan was committed to supporting Kashmiri people's right for self-determination. To another query, she said that Pakistan's policy on drone attacks was clearly determined by the consensus resolution of the Joint Session of the Parliament.
In response to another question, she said Pakistan Embassy in Libya was in touch with Pakistani community leaders to know what kind of support they needed in the prevailing situation. When asked to comment why Pakistan government was a bit hesitant to recognise the new Libyan set up, she said that nothing new was happened except change of a regime. "Our embassy is already working there while Libyan embassy in Pakistan is also working......isn't this a recognition," she questioned.
