The scenic and descriptive canvases of Mughees Riaz show a peaceful environment of rural area as well as complex human conditions through figurative works recently at Canvas Gallery, Karachi. The exhibition includes his works portraying extremes in our lives - the silence and quiet atmosphere in the backdrop of Ravi and the impressive human figures in multiple poses going through various experiences of life. Both phases of life are true and exist side by side. Humans have to bear them both but animals remains the ones to enjoy peace and quiet.
He symbolically paint animals in his paintings - cat, dog, hen, buffaloes, crows and pigeons all have their own place and meaning on his canvases. The nude human figures in hues of clay indicate the link between human and clay as man is created with clay and will become clay after death.
The human figures are accompanied by various objects and animals as well, thus giving different meanings to each painting. He tried to explain the peculiar behaviour of humans towards unpredictable circumstances surrounding them in the form of explosions, suicide attacks, target killings, inflation, corruption, and unemployment. Ravi is a main source of inspiration for Mugheez from the beginning of his career, waiting, sitting and standing buffaloes near Ravi covers a major part of his work.
Mughees paintings have the reflections of his inspiration which he take from Nature. Fascinated by Nature Mughees work is an amalgam of his inner feelings and Nature be it sky, water or buffaloes and crows.
Capturing the wideness of sky, tranquillity of rivers and peace and serenity of the field derives immense satisfaction and pleasure for him. Buffaloes, crows, brown fields, pink sky especially sunset always compel him to paint and express his love for Nature. He pours his passion into these subjects.
Mughees landscapes show broad area of sky and an equally broad plain foreground or river, as in the painting 'Sunset and Ravi' and 'Waiting Buffalo'. His landscapes make you feel life as it is going on in a certain set pattern, giving viewers an opportunity to peep into the way of life in rural areas, where gypsy move from one place to another in search of a living, setting their colourful huts, especially near water.
The surface, colour and shade he uses for his paintings also play a positive part in enhancing his works. The human figure contour, the skyline, the river bed, the water, the trees and the buffaloes, and crows all have realistic colour tones making the paintings more appealing. Thus the artworks of Mughees Riaz reflect Nature in a meaningful and attractive way showing a conscious person within.
