About 160 million people in Asia are suffering from Osteoporosis. 10 million of Pakistanis annually develop osteoporosis related fractures, of them 80 percent are women, said the medical experts during an awareness programme organised by the Osteoporosis Society of Pakistan (OSO) at City School here.
The speakers including OSP Balochistan chapter president Dr Lal Mohammad Kakar and Dr Uzma Tareen warned against the growing vulnerability to Osteoporosis with alarming number of 10 million Pakistanis inflicted with it. They revealed that due to no proper diet and ill- food planning, one in every three women and one in every five men have Osteoporosis or will have osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime.
"Women are more likely to inflict from osteoporosis, they said adding 55 percent of people over the age of 50 years are always at dire risk to have the disease. The disease is spreading on an alarming scale they said and stressed that public awareness campaign could help avoid it.
According to the latest statistics about Pakistan over 80 percent of women aged between 75 to 84 years and 55 percent of women aged between 45 to 54 years suffering from Osteoporosis Medical expert noted that women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, as they have less bone mass than men, tend to live longer and take in less calcium.
Stressing the need of taking proper diet, they suggested that daily intake of green vegetables, milk, cheese, fish and other things containing calcium from the early age of children can help prevent the disease. The principal of City School Tabia Anwar also spoke. Large number of school student, people from various walks of life attended the awareness programme.
