This year Pakistan's fishermen communities are marking the World Fisheries Day today (Monday) with a theme "Food Sovereignty for Fishing Communities", to highlight the need to protect the marine life from over-exploitation.
World Fisheries Day is celebrated every year on November 21 throughout the world by the fisher-folk communities. "World Fisheries Day celebrations serve as an important reminder that we must focus on changing the way the world manages global fisheries to ensure sustainable stocks and healthy ecosystems," Pakistan Fisher-folk Forum (PFF) says. The forum says this year the celebration of World Fisheries Day is linked with the theme "Food Sovereignty for Fishing Communities": a struggle of fisher-folk to become self-reliant for food.
Pakistan Fisher-folk Forum (PFF) also celebrates this day every year through rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural programmes, dramas, exhibition, music shows and demonstrations to highlight the importance of maintaining the country's fisheries. In the continuation of this tradition, PFF is going to organise World Fisheries Day in the form of a large public gathering coloured with unity, music, tableau, etc. Fisheries Minister, Zahid Ali Bhurgari, will be the chief guest. The event will take place at Motani Jeti, Ibrahim Hydri, the forum added.
