Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Tuesday issued notice to secretary foreign affairs for December 01 in a petition seeking inclusion of Surjit Singh alias Makhan Singh, in the list of foreigners languishing in Pakistani jails despite completing their jail terms.
Earlier Inspector General (IG) of Punjab prisons on November 02 presented a list of 74 foreigners, 32 among them were Indians, who were languishing in Pakistani jails despite completing their jail term. The IG said foreign offices of concerned countries and that of Pakistan were responsible of their detention. The court had directed the foreign office and all other concerned authorities to expedite the process for their release.
The petitioner a bar member Awais Sheikh submitted that Surjit Singh have spent 10 years more than his jail term. He said after completion of sentence, the continuous detention of Singh is illegal and in violation of fundamental rights provided and protected by the international law.
