The prices of essential kitchen items registered a sharp increase during the current week as compared to last week, a survey conducted by Business Recorder revealed on Friday. Traders at Rawalpindi/ Islamabad wholesale and retail markets told Business Recorder that prices of eggs, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, ginger, live chicken/chicken meat and garlic registered a substantial increase during the week.
The prices of most of the essentials especially onions, tomatoes, spices, green tea, yoghurt, milk and fruits moved up though these items fell considerably a few weeks ago. During the week, prices of some of the food items including sugar, decreased by Rs 5 per kg as compared to previous week. Sugar at present is available at Rs 65 per kg against last week's price when it was being sold at Rs 70-75 per kg.
The survey noted that vegetables and pulses' prices registered a sharp increase, as tomatoes were sold at Rs 80 per kg, which last week were available at Rs 60 per kg, onions at Rs 50 per kg against last week price of Rs 45 per kg, ginger at Rs 180 against Rs 160 per kg and garlic at Rs 220 per kg, against Rs 200 per kg. Price of green chillies increased by Rs 10 per kg at Rs 130 per kg against Rs 120 per kg last week. Cauliflower is being sold at Rs 50 per kg against Rs 45 per kg last week. Okra sold at Rs 75-80 against Rs 70 per kg last week. Potato decreased by Rs 5 per kg to sell at Rs 40 per kg against Rs 45 per kg; cabbage price registered a decrease of Rs 3-5 per kg at Rs 33-35 per kg against Rs 38 last week.
Prices of packaged milk, ghee/cooking oil, spices, tea, turmeric and other items remained unchanged during the week, as ghee/cooking oil was sold at Rs 195 per kg, turmeric at Rs 260 per kg, powder chills at Rs 280 per kg and tea at Rs 125 per 200gram pack. Moreover, chicken meat, which last week was selling at Rs 190 per kg is now being sold at Rs 210 per kg, while live chicken price has increased by Rs 15 per kg, which last week was available at Rs 110 per kg and now is being sold at Rs 125 per kg.
The survey further noted that prices of most of the fruits decreased during the week under review as compared to previous week. Apples were available at Rs 110-120 per kg depending on quality against Rs 140-150 per last week. Banana was available at Rs 50 per dozen against Rs 60 per dozen and grapes at Rs 220 against Rs 250 per kg during the week under review as compared to the previous week.
