Six Togolese football players died after the bus that was transporting the Etoile Filante team crashed into a ravine, French broadcaster RFI reported on Sunday. The accident took place Saturday about 100 kilometres north of the capital Lome as the players were on the way to a league game.
The bus, which had enough seats for 45 people, burst into flames after the accident. A burst tyre had likely caused the bus to skid off the road, police said.
The injured were taken to a military hospital in the vicinity for treatment, though the exact number was not clear. The names of the deceased were not immediately released.
In 2010, during the African Cup of Nations, two Togolese players were shot dead in an attack on the team's bus in Angola.
