Swansea and Aston Villa played out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League at the Liberty Stadium here on Sunday in a match overshadowed by the death of Wales manager Gary Speed. News of Speed's death was confirmed just over an hour before kickoff and as both teams observed a minute's silence before the match got underway, fans broke into chants of "there's only one Gary Speed" and rounds of applause.
Villa goalkeeper Shay Given, who had played with Speed at Newcastle, was in tears prior to kick-off. Given the prevailing mood, it was perhaps only to be expected the match was a largely uninspired clash. Swansea substitute Leroy Lita had the newly promoted hosts' best chance, firing narrowly wide, while Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor was twice denied by Michel Vorm.
