Senate Chairman Farooq Naek, who is leading Pakistan's delegation to the joint hearing with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN General Assembly, spent a busy day meeting chief delegates of Benin, Trinidad Tobago and Zimbabwe. During the meetings, Naek underscored the importance of closer ties between the parliaments and exchange of visits by parliamentarians to share their experiences for mutual benefit.
In his meeting with President National Assembly of Benin Professor Mathuri Caffi Nago, Naek informed him about the sacrifices Pakistan had made fighting terrorists. He said many Pakistanis lost their lives while the country suffered huge economic losses. The chairman also briefed him about the recent Nato/ISAF attacks on two check-posts in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were martyred. The raid was a grave violation of Pakistan's sovereignty but severely undermined the role of a key ally which had made tremendous contribution to global peace and security, he said.
In his meeting with the Speaker of Trinidad and Tobago Wade Mark, the Chairman discussed parliamentary practices of his country and stressed the importance of closer interaction between the two parliaments to further strengthen the democratic system. During meeting with the Speaker of Parliament of Zimbabwe, Lovemore Moyo, Naek briefed him on bicameral system of his country. He said that Parliament was sovereign, media was vibrant, judiciary was independent but the scourge of extremism posed challenges for the country. Senators Gul Mohammad Lot and Shahid Bughti were also present in the meetings.
