Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab is set to meet with Prime Minister in the chair to discuss challenging situation arising out of popularity of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the country. Party sources said the PPP Punjab leadership had discussed briefly about the disgruntled elements in the party, vying for joining the PTI.
Therefore, the Prime Minister has convened PPP Punjab meeting on coming Saturday to discuss the situation. It may be noted that former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has joined the PTI on November 27. Prior to him, the PPP Lahore president Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar has also joined Imran Khan after developing differences with local party leadership. There are also rumours that another former Foreign Minister Asif Ahmed Ali is also likely to join the PTI ahead. Renowned PPP stalwart is also praising Imran Khan constantly over the last few weeks.
Not only this, a good number of provincial Parliamentarians have also either sided with Shah Mehmood Qureshi or decided to form a forward block in the Punjab assembly. The provincial set up of the party is passing through a crisis-like situation, said the sources.
According to the party sources, the Prime Minister would take issues including stuck up development funds of PPP members in the Punjab assembly besides meeting the annoyed members of the party. Also, said the sources, President Asif Ali Zardari is likely to invite the PPP Punjab party members and workers at presidency soon to discuss their problems. He has already divided the PPP Punjab into two factions ie PPP Central Punjab and the PPP South Punjab. However, this step has failed to control the damage and there is a strong impression in party ranks and files that more is needed to be done to avoid further damage to the party.
