Provincial Minister for Labour, Haji Ehsaanuddin Qureshi has said that government will provide required funds for the completion of ongoing development projects launched by the labour department. New welfare schemes would also be initiated specially for the provision of modern education to the children of labourers and residential facilities to them.
Talking to various delegations of workers, Haji Ehsaan-ud-Din Qureshi said that free education including books, stationery, transport and uniform are also being provided to 28 thousand children of workers in 46 workers welfare schools of the province. He said that the welfare board is bearing all educational expenses of the children of workers in those six districts of the Punjab where workers welfare schools are not existed.
He said that focus of the government is upon primary and protective healthcare and huge funds are being allocated for the provision of state of the art healthcare facilities to the masses of the province specially the labourers and their families.
He said the MMR in LHWs covered area is 147/100,000 live births, compared 300 to 350/100,000 to uncovered areas, therefore, the LHWs, LHVs and the community midwives were being appointed at all the health centres in the remote areas. Ehsaanuddin said that government was appointing trained lady health workers, LHVs and community midwives at health centres, especially in remote areas so that infants and mothers could be saved from fatal diseases, whereas, LHWs were being appointed in remote areas.
He said that the specific objectives of the programmes are to reduce the under five mortality rate to less than 65 per thousand live births by the year 2011 target 2015: 45/1000, to reduce the new-born mortality rate to less than 40 per thousand live births target 40/1000, than 55 per thousand live births by the year 2011 target 40/1000, to reduce maternal mortality ratio to 200 per 10,000 live births by the year 2011 target 140/10000 and increase the proportion of deliveries attended by the skilled birth attendants at home or in health facilities to 90 percent by 2015, he added. In order to shift labourers to teaching hospitals swiftly, 20 new fully equipped with modern medical equipment ambulances have been handed over to the social security hospitals, he concluded.
