The ninth Muharram procession of 'Alam-o-Zuljinnah' was taken out amid tight security and aerial surveillance on Monday to commemorate the sacrifices of heroes of Karbala. First of the two main processions, the ninth Muharram procession, set off from Nomaish Chowrangi moved gradually with thousands of mourners through main route of M. A. Jinnah Road and culminated at Imambargah Hussainia Irania at Kharadar just before sunset.
Heavy contingents of rangers and police were deployed on all roads and streets leading to the procession route, which surveillance helicopters were assisting with flying time to time over the procession to foil any bid of security breach.
Police and rangers personnel continued patrolling roads and streets with random checking of passerby, motorbikes and four-wheel vehicles at different points around the procession route. The mourners clad in black including women, children and men with black flags in hands inscribed with religious scriptures remembering the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at the Karbala's historic battle some 14 centuries back.
Meanwhile, the mourners continued to join the main procession from different parts of the metropolis. The entire city presented a deserted look and public transport remained off the roads. The security arrangements were exceptional to protect the mourners during the procession to perform the annual Muharram rituals.
Religious scholars addressed gatherings ahead of the procession, extolling the heroes of Karbala for their sacrifices and fortitude. Along with rangers, police personnel and traffic constables, a large number of scouts also endeavoured to streamline the vehicular traffic and facilitate the mourners to guide them towards main procession.
Roadside stalls with facilities like medical assistance and potable water for mourners were set up all the way to the procession end in Kharadar. Ambulances were also ready to deal with any untoward situation. The 10th Muharram (Ashura) procession will be taken out from the same place on Tuesday (today).
