Business community engaged with pottery has appealed to the government to take immediate steps for the survival of the industry in Pasrur and bringing it out from the multifarious problems it is facing. The Pasrur tehsil of the district famous for producing pottery is taking its last breath because many units have been closed due lack of incentives, government support and unresolved problems being faced by the industry since long.
The tehsil is eminent for producing clay made cooking pots like handya (cauldron), which is still being used for cooking in big hotels and restaurants and domestically in the country. A Business Recorder correspondent visited Pasrur and observed that pottery industry is famous and hundred years old industry of the area but its advancement and growth has become stagnant due to lack of attention of concerned departments. The owners of the small potteries were confronting serious problems as a result of which they are considering closing their units.
It was observed that there was a great need of establishment of 'mini industrial estate' in the historic Pasrur and provision of all basic facilities under one roof to the local businessmen engaged with various industries. Besides, special steps should also be taken for moulding the industry on modern and scientific lines because most of the very small pottery units at present are working with traditional techniques. Most of them are functioning on roadside but producing cooking utensils and decoration pieces with great skill and dexterity.
There is a great need of conducting survey for ascertaining the needs and requirements of the industry to unearth the hidden talent functioning in the tehsil. Concerned government departments should formulate a special programme for the development of old industries wherein soft loan facilities should be given to small businessmen enabling them modernise their workplaces as well as come out of economic constrains.
