The Chairman of Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, on Monday appealed to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take up the Air Marshal Asghar Khan case, which claimed involvement of distribution of huge funds by spy agencies among politicians to sway the results of 1988 general elections.
Addressing a press conference along with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Istaqlal leader Air Marshal (Retd) Asghar Khan, who announced to support PTI in next general elections, Imran appealed to Justice Chaudhry to take up the matter on priority basis, so that the truth should come out "like the sun engulfed by clouds".
About his case pending before Supreme Court since 1997, Asghar said he had written five or six letters to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, requesting to reopen the case, "but they are not ready to listen to me for reasons best known to them". Reposing full trust in Imran Khan, he said that dishonest people had been ruling the country for the last six decades. "Now, only PTI-led by Imran Khan is the only ray of hope for bringing the desired change in the political landscape of the country".
Asghar Khan, who was once labelled as an agent of Bengalis, said that if he knew the circumstances in Pakistan could have been this worse as of today, he would have preferred to migrate to Bangladesh. Recalling massive rigging, he called upon Imran to prepare his party workers so as to block rigging in the next elections. "This is for sure that there will be massive rigging. PTI must be well prepared to defeat such elements as there has been no free and fair election in the country's history", he opined.
In the 1988 elections, the results, he said, were sent through General Headquarters (GHQ) to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). "The political parties were bribed by ISI to rig the polls ...you can not name even a single politician who has not taken money from ISI," he added. After looting the national wealth, he said, politicians turned into a mafia "and this is the appropriate time to get rid of them before it is too late." "Let us block rigging in future...we are ready to cooperate with PTI in whatever manner and capacity we can, as our ideology is similar to that of PTI", he added.
He showed optimism that if free and fair elections were held in the country, PTI would clean sweep the polls. Commenting on Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) role in elections, he said ISI manipulates the election results in candidates of their choice.
In 1990, the government formed a commission, headed by retired Air Mardhal Zulfikar Ali Khan to find out ISI role during elections, he said, adding that the commission reached the conclusion that 'ISI provides financial and technical support to political parties. "The findings of the commission were never made public. This is what ISI is doing and this was the view of the investigator who conducted the inquiry against the spy agency", he alleged.
Meanwhile, about his alleged link with the establishment and ISI, Imran said that he is ready to quit politics if anybody has solid proof in this connection. Imran said that he could not say no to anybody who wants join PTI. "We waited for this day for about 15 years. I have been saying there will come a time when people will break enter PTI and else all the rhetoric of conspiracy is to defeat PTI", he added.
When asked to comment on Nisar Ali Khan's statement that he would challenge his assets details in Supreme Court, Imran said it is irrelevant, "but Nisar is free to form a commission to probe into my assets details" as well as Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif's belongings. "If my assets details were proved wrong, I'll quit politics. Will he (Nisar) and his bosses will do the same?" he questioned.
