Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) released its fortnightly report reveals that around 11 million cotton bales have been sourced to the country's ginners by December 15, 2011. As revealed by the report, there has been a 17.69 percent increase in the quantum of cotton reaching the ginners by December 15th, as compared to the 9.37 million bales of cotton that reached the ginners during the same period last year.
Briefing to newsmen about the cotton arrival here on Sunday PCGA chairman Amanullah Qureshi alongwith group head Haji Muhammad Akram and Shehzad Ali Khan said that 8,594,628 cotton bales were sold to the textile units, exporters bought some 422,297 bales. Thus, overall 9.013 million bales have been traded till now, without TCP participating in the trading activity so far. Prime Minister has asked the TCP to purchase one million bales on the price to be settled by the PCGA representatives.
Earlier, Federal Government was reluctant to allow TCP to procure the cotton under the pressure of Aptma, PCGA Chairman added that there are 2,022,093 bales, which still remain to be sold. Chairman of PCGA Amanullah Qureshi has said that increase of cotton arrival was merely 17.69 percent. He said total 11,036,018 bales of cotton were received during this season. It was 1,658,755 bales more than last year showing an increase of 17.69 percent in the production in spite of unfair weather, flood, diseases and pest attacks in Sindh and monsoon rains in Punjab. While 1,385,916 bales were received during last fortnight from December 1st to December 15, 2011.
He said that total 1,048 ginning factories are operational in Sindh and Punjab. Recent floods had badly hit the cotton crop in the districts of Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Dadu, Mirpur Khas Sangarh and other areas of Sindh. They said that 42.73 percent cotton was destroyed in Hyderabad, 58.62 percent in Mirpur Khas, 52.02 percent in Sangarh, 45.92 percent in Nawabshah, 2.45 percent in Naushehro Feroze. The report reveals an increase of 51.85 percent Multan, 81.40 percent cotton in Lodhran district,39.86 percent in Khanewal, 111.55 percent in Muzaffargarh, 31.10 percent in Dera Ghazi Khan, 139.49 percent in Rajanpur, Layyah 61.89 percent, 34.06 percent in Vehari, 394.57 percent in Kasur, 38.26 in Toba Tek Singh, 12.70 percent in Faisalabad, 83.73 percent in Mianwali, 97.74 percent in Bhakkar, and 41.83 percent in Sargodha. The unsold stock is 2,022,093 bales, which is more than last year, when unsold stock was 11,07,609.
Chairman of PCGA said that Punjab contributed 8,756,225 bales, last year it contributed 60,55,987 bales showing an increase of 44.59 percent.
Similarly Sindh contributed 2,279,793 bales against the last year production of 3,221,276 bales showing a decrease of 31.36 percent and Balochistan 40,900 bales.
District-wise production data showed that Multan contributed 4,80,929 bales, Lodhran 3,24,823 bales, Khanewal 8,73,314 bales, Muzaffargarh 4,24,493 bales, Dera Ghazi Khan 3,22,457 bales, Rajanpur 4,06,083 bales, Layyah 2,32,146 bales, Vehari 8,63,354 bales, Sahiwal 5,85,194 bales, Pakpattan 2,87,564 bales, Okara 47,015 bales, Kasur 31,900 bales, Toba Tek Singh 3,22,142 bales, Faisalabad 112,644 bales, Jhang 1,98,782 bales, Mianwali 2,21,400 bales, Bhakkar 1,48,800 bales, Sargodha 47,015, Rahim Yar Khan 10,22,001 bales, Bahawalpur 9,28,235 bales, and Bahawalnagar 8,74,531 bales.
Sindh's district-wise production figures were: Hyderabad 1,82,780 bales, Mirpurkhas 1,45,198 bales, Sanghar 6,90,960 bales, Nawabshah 1,67,715 bales, Naushero Feroze 1,78,736, Khairpur 1,95,719 bales, Ghotki 2,53,796 bales, Sukkur 2,92,155 bales, and Dadu 26,618 bales, Jamshoro 76,904, Badin 26,995, Balochistan added 42,318 bales to the total.
PCGA claimed that 2 million bales were destroyed in recent floods in Sindh. Policy-makers may hope that bumper cotton crop will help the government make deficiency in other areas, taking the annual growth rates to over 7 percent. The chairman PCGA reiterated demand to the government to announce relief and bail-out package for 250 cotton ginning factories of flood-hit areas. The report said that the ginners pressed 90,12,361 bales. Only 4,22,297 bales were exported by commercial exporters (who mostly purchased from Punjab), and merely 1,99,518 bales were purchased from Sindh.
The textile industry purchased 90,13,925 bales and 20,22,093 bales were available with ginners as unsold stock. They said that cotton trading remained firm amid strong physical price and higher cottonseed prices.
