Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday chaired an important meeting of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leaders to discuss the Memogate issue and evolve a strategy in this regard. Sources said the meeting was given a detailed briefing on the proceedings in the apex court by the Attorney General for Pakistan Molvi Anwar-ul-Haq. The AG attended the meeting on a special invitation from the government.
The Prime Minister was quoted as saying that the government had immense respect judiciary and its decisions and that the government would take all the decisions strictly in accordance with Constitution and law. The meeting was also reportedly briefed by former law Minister Dr Babar Awan about the Constitutional and legal aspects of the memo controversy.
The meeting further discussed the political strategy of the party as well as the rejoinders submitted by Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and Director General Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) General Shuja Pasha to the Supreme Court on the memo issue.
The Prime Minister also briefed the party leaders about his meeting with President Zardari in Karachi and the discussions that took place between them on the issue. Sources said there was a possibility of another meeting between the Prime Minister and the President late Wednesday night as President had left Karachi for Islamabad on Wednesday evening.
APP adds: A Spokesman of the Prime Minister House has contradicted the news item telecast by TV channels that Core Committee's meeting was held at the Prime Minister House Wednesday, which was attended by prominent leaders of the party. The Spokesman said that no such meeting was held at the Prime Minister House and therefore speculations in this regard have no basis.
