The India Supreme Court's decision to clear the release of controversial Bollywood film ‘Padmaavat’ in four states where it was banned, has been met with violence and protests, as many Rajput women have threatened to commit suicide.

Shatrani Manch, a Rajput women's body in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, gave an official memorandums addressed to Indian prime minister, president, Rajasthan governor and the chief minister. The movie is releasing on January 25 amid all the chaos.

The protesters had demanded them to ban the film and if they failed to do so, they have threatened to commit ‘Jauhar’ (self-immolation), the same way Rani Padmavati, along with 16,000 other Rajput women did in 1303.

However, the Shatrani Manch has now dropped the threat of carrying out self-immolation on January 24. Instead, they will file a petition at the Supreme Court to commit suicide. Nirmala Rathore, joint secretary Shatrani Manch, said that they do not want to break the law, which is why they have dropped the self-immolation bid and the call to commit ‘Jauhar’, Times of India reported.

Deepika’s rowdy avatar is proof that she can take on any male actor

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has sent an invitation to Rajput Karni Sena and other Rajput associations to watch the movie before its official screening. However, in a press conference on Saturday, one of the Rajput leaders said the letter has been sent after the date of release of the film has been fixed. “This letter will be put into flames as it is just a part of show-off which has been done in an endeavour to prove that ‘we have invited Rajput community leaders’.”

The film tells the story of a 14th Century Hindu queen belonging to the high Rajput caste and the Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor will play the lead roles.
