National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Tuesday claimed that it has issued 1.1 million Pakistan Cards so far and disbursed Rs nine billion to rain-affected families in Sindh. Deputy Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik said, during distribution process of Pakistan Card, started in September 2011, the authority has almost facilitated around 84 percent affected families in the province.
In an exclusive talk with APP on Tuesday, he said, the number of affected families was 1.344 million and 1.1 million families have already been provided first instalment of Rs 10,000 each in the first phase. The same amount would be provided per family in the second phase, he added.
Tariq Malik said due to flood last year, 16 districts of the province were affected and the authority was working in 14 districts including Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Mirpur Khas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta, Ghotki, Tando Allah Yar, Sanghar, Matiari, Kharipur and Naushero Feroz.
Giving details, the deputy chairman said NADRA had set up distribution centres at districts including Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpur Khas, Tando Allahyar and Sanghar while distribution of Pakistan Cards in Naushero Feroz and Khairpur would start soon.
He said that throughout the distribution process, NADRA ensured strong checks so only the deserving families belonging to the provincially notified calamity-hit areas could obtain the Pakistan Card. He said the authority, in addition to setting up centres, has also mobilised its mobile resources Mobile Registration Vans (MRVs) to process the CNIC for free in all the affected areas in co-ordination with the public representatives and district administration.
Answering a question, he said NADRA had launched a mobile SMS service in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and all operating telecom companies to determine a person's existence in the beneficiary list for the Pakistan Card project to facilitate the rain-affected people in checking status of their requests.
The eligibility of the applicant for the Pakistan Card can be checked by simply sending his or her CNIC number to the designated short code, he added. In response, a text message will be sent from Nadra's central server confirming CNIC existence in the beneficiary list. The intent to use this service is to assist the provincial and local governments in curtailing the rush at the centres and helping the flood victims by using the technology, he said, the service is for free.
