Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Wednesday submitted a call attention notice to Senate asking the government to update the House on escape of Jamaat Ali Shah, former Pakistan Commissioner of Indus Water Commission, to Canada.
The call attention notice was submitted by JI Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed asking the government to submit report to the House pertaining to the inquiry, if conducted, so far into the incident taking into account negligence of the authorities concerned in this regard.
The senator has asked five questions in the notice stating whether it was true that former Pakistan Indus Water Commissioner had compromised on the national interest by allowing India to construct Nimoo Bazgo Hydropower Project (built by India during 2002- 2009) and now escaped to Canada despite his name being on Exit Control List (ECL)?
"Whether he (Shah) was alone or some other persons also escaped along with the former Pak Indus Water Commissioner to Canada", he asked, demanding of the government to inform the House that why the matter was neglected from 2002 to 2009.
He further asked to update the House on measures if taken to identify those involved and punishment given or to being given to them. The senator also asked the government to inform the House about the measures taken to bring the former commissioner back to the country. According to reports, Jamaat Ali Shah's name was put on ECL after it was established that he had facilitated India in building a hydropower project on Pakistan's Indus River causing huge damage to the country's water resources.
